On World Environment Day 2025, marked under the theme “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution,” World Vision Kenya (WVK) has issued a strong call for collective action to address the growing plastic pollution crisis, which it warns is endangering the health and future of children across the country.
According to WVK, plastic pollution is not just an environmental issue but a pressing humanitarian challenge, particularly for vulnerable populations in Kenya’s informal settlements and arid and semi-arid regions. These communities face heightened risks from climate change, poor waste management, and pollution-related health issues such as malnutrition, stunting, and exposure to toxic chemicals.
Global data shows over 430 million tonnes of plastic are produced annually, with less than 9% recycled. In Kenya, daily waste generation stands at 22,000 tonnes, 20% of which is plastic , yet only 8% is recycled, with much of it ending up in landfills or water sources.
To tackle this crisis, World Vision Kenya is implementing a range of interventions under its 2021–2025 strategy, including,Promotion of clean energy ,Climate-smart agriculture and Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR),Plastic reduction awareness campaigns and waste management advocacy and Partnerships with government, civil society, and the private sector
These efforts have already restored over 168,000 hectares of land, supported 130,000+ households, and positively impacted more than 500,000 individuals in 20 counties.
WVK is now calling on all stakeholders including the Government of Kenya, private sector, civil society, and citizens — to join in ending plastic pollution by Enforcing plastic bans and regulations,Investing in recycling and circular economy solutions,Supporting community-based waste systems and local innovations and Expanding public education on sustainable practices.
